On Oct. 24th, a field day was held to learn about the economics of conservation practices in agriculture. Five River Valley students attended the event held on Dolan Farms near Dodgeville Wisconsin. Ryan and his wife Krista are dairy farmers and members of the “Iowa County Uplands Watershed Group.” This is a group of farmers who are working together to utilize conservation practices to reduce nutrient and soil run-off that can flow downstream. For fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico, this can lead to devastating impacts like Dead Zones which making fishing much more challenging. The watershed group has teamed up with fishermen from Louisiana and Mississippi who use sustainable fishing practices to raise awareness about the issue. At this event students toured the farm, enjoyed great food, learned about the potential economic benefits of conservation practices, and had the opportunity to talk with farmers and fishermen.
